FAQ

The central-government fee is Rs. 10, payable by cash, demand draft, banker's cheque or Indian Postal Order; state governments set their own fee and mode. Applicants below the poverty line pay nothing and attach a copy of the BPL card.

How long does the office have to reply?

The Public Information Officer must reply within 30 days (48 hours where the matter concerns life or liberty). If there is no reply you can file a first appeal with the First Appellate Authority.

Which officer should I address an application to?

The officer with authority over the matter - for example the Station House Officer for a police complaint or the Principal for a school request. Use the designation, not just the name.

Should I keep a stamped copy?

Yes. The receiving stamp with date is your proof of filing.
