SUM formula in Excel - add up cells, rows and columns

SUM adds numbers: a range (D2:D51), single cells (D2,D4,D6) or whole columns.

=SUM(number1, [number2], ...)

Tips

  • SUM ignores text, so a header in the range does no harm.
  • Use "row total" in the studio to add a row's figure columns and skip codes and names.

Why does my SUM formula show 0?

The numbers are probably stored as text. Convert them (Data > Text to Columns, or Paste Special > Multiply by 1) and SUM will add them.
